I had an idea related to this that I forgot to mention:

Cut-up these indestructible belts and wrap them around the pulley
instead of using heat-shrink.  The seam where the cut is made could
destroy the small red rubber belts.  Perhaps, though, the belt could
be wrapped with its teeth facing out and then a matching belt could be
used as the drive belt.  This would require two (per motor) low-friction
rods or some-such to hold the belt into place and to wrap it snugly-enough
around the pulley to work, but it might just work.  There are
variations on the idea possible, too.
